Well here is again a page from my sketchbook. Yes I already did another version of Smaug but I don’t like it (that’s why I put it in scraps). I drew this first version while I was a week at a terrible place (concentration camp Buchenwald). I did it to get my head free of thoughts and cut out all around me.
I think the design of Smaug should fulfill Tolkien’s idea of the Dragon. Tolkien himself did some illustrations of how he imagined the dragons in his stories (like Smaug --> [link] , the white dragon in “Roverrandom”…and so on). His dragons have always long bodies, with ears (no horns) and bat-like wings. So he has a very classical idea of his dragons. I really like that. I took some drawings of Smaug which Tolkien had made and of cause the description in the book “The Hobbit” as guideline. I think a design like that fits much more to Smaug’s character. Tolkien did the tip of his tail and tip of the tongue as a kind of medieval lily (like it was shown in some medieval graphics). I hope Peter Jackson keeps Tolkien’s idea of Smaug in his mind, and it won’t be a typical Fantasy- dragon design (But it’s the most popular design of the majority,so…). I guess the design will be something of Allan Lee or John Howe (both great artists), who already worked with Peter Jackson on the “The Lord of the Rings” movies.
As long the result isn’t something like that--> [link] I don’t know if it was Del Totros idea, but I think this is a no-go. I really really like Peter König’s work (I like his concept art, he is still my fav sculptor and I have big respect of his work) but this design would mess up with Smaug IMO…
directly from wikipedia: "Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug:[3] One of the last remaining dragons in Middle-earth. He guards the treasure in Erebor. Cumberbatch will portray Smaug through motion capture, similar to Andy Serkis with Gollum, and has been doing movement exercises to become limber." ...if that helps.
Oh, no, I hope that (König’s art) won't be the design for Smaug! I'm not too thrilled with what I've heard about Peter Jackson's The Hobbit thus far, but I'm still trying to keep an open mind. My mind might just shut its doors if Smaug isn't... well, Smaug. The Chief and Greatest of Calamities is one of the great climaxes of the story! Perhaps you'd better send this off to Jackson before any permanent damage is dealt to the terror of Laketown.
Happily König’s design wasn’t used in the movie! It was an idea under Del Toro’s direction. I guess Peter Jackson’s Smaug will look like this --> [link] with a bit of Benedict Cumberbatch…(I can’t imagine somehow )
